Recycling & Reuse effort

Recycling is one of many ways the Co-Op works to become good community and environmental stewards. The Co-Op recycles at a rate of 91% and actively working to raise to achieve zero waste. Working alongside companies like Waste Management, North America’s largest recycler, we have expanded our organics recycling. In 2014, the Co-Op aided in doubling the number of stores engaging in the organics recycling program. In 2015, we recycled 30,000 tons of cardboard and wax cardboard, 1,000 tons of mixed paper, and 100 tons of low-density polyethylene and mixed plastic. Which means the Co-Op saves about:

  • 1.9 million trees
  • 6 billion gallons of water
  • 61,000 cubic yards of landfill space
  • 5 million barrels of oil

Items recycled in-store:

  • Plastic
  • Paper bags
  • Egg cartons
  • Plastic food packages (like what strawberries and mushrooms come in)

How does it work?

  • Drop off items at the Co-op
  • Co-op Volunteers sort and package the items

Conscious Shopping Made Easy! These items can be re-purposed or recycled. Thank you for helping us extend the life of items which would otherwise go straight to the landfill! Please email Mercedes at Utahcoop@comcast.net for more information.
